US Drive-Away was started in 2001 by Howard McCann. Mr. McCann was the General Manager of First Class Coach & Equipment in Winter Garden, FL from 1994 to 2001. FCC&E was the Florida distributor for Thomas Built Bus, the largest manufacturer of school buses in the US.
Mr. McCann’s duties included arranging for the delivery of buses from Thomas in North Carolina to the customers located throughout the state of Florida. Upon his retirement in 2001, Mr. McCann agreed to assist FCC&E with its deliveries by arranging for drivers to drive them to the customer. Hence the terminology of Drive-Away. The driver drives the vehicle away to the delivery location.
The business concentrated on school buses, first within the state of Florida for FCC&E and Thomas, then expanding to International Bus through its dealer in Florida, Rivers Bus of Jacksonville. Soon, it expanded to deliver nationwide for both Thomas and International, accomplishing a feat in 2004 of delivering on the same day a bus in Seattle, WA, San Diego, CA, Key West, FL and Bangor, ME.
The company slowly spread into other markets, primarily used trucks. Mr. McCann controlled the growth, not wanting to expand beyond his ability to manage it singularly. He decided to sell the business and did so in 2015. However, the deal fell through at the last moment as the purchaser’s wife suddenly passed away. Mr. McCann agreed to take back the business after the name had been changed from DVD to US Drive-Away.
He realized he needed to hire come additional management personnel and did so in Jim Bay as Operations and now General Manager. This allowed expansion into other markets and concentration in the utility truck market was given priority. This market penetration has injected new life and profitability into the business. Recently,we delivered over 300 utility trucks to Houston, Florida and the ports for shipment to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands for hurricane relief.
