The Inner Voice Incorporated

Inner Voice was founded in 1984 by Rev. Robert Johnson as a drop-in center for homeless Chicagoans. In 1991, the agency began an aggressive expansion program that included the establishment of the Rev. Robert Johnson Learning Center. This facility is the agency's headquarters and main facility for educational programs, client intake, program administration, and counseling.



In 2002, the City of Chicago adopted a housing-first philosophy consistent with its Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness. Inner Voice continues to strive to reach the goals of the Plan and has played an instrumental role in the development of its strategy, planning and implementation. In 2003 the Inner Voice operated one interim housing facility that provided 120 days of shelter and supportive services. Last year we managed nine interim sites that provided shelter to 419 families and 88 single adults. In addition, as coordinator of the Emergency Shelter Response Network, Inner Voice sheltered 8, 500 men, women and children in emergency, overnight shelters. In the years to come we must partner with groups and individuals that can help us to continue the fight to end homelessness.



One key to helping the homeless is through education. Last year we enrolled 127 students in GED classes- almost 40% of these completed classes and qualify for many more job opportunities as a result. Next year we plan to expand the GED program to provide more opportunities for more individuals.



Another important key to helping the homeless is to provide opportunities for employment. Individuals that enroll in our employment programs receive one-on-one coaching, interview and resume preparation assistance, job leads and post-employment, supportive services. Last year 513 individuals were placed into full-time jobs.



Although these accomplishments are significant, our measure of success as an agency is a steady reduction in the number of homeless families and individuals. We believe, in our heart, through our mission, and with your help, that we can win this fight.
