Developed in 1980 by the Lebed family, it originally focused on controlling lymphedema in Breast Cancer Survivors. Because lymphedema can occur after any surgery that damages the lymphatic system, it became a popular exercise program for those with chronic conditions. Because it is done slowly and smoothly, it became popular with older adults. The program can be done seated, standing, or in the water. On land, there is always a chair available for balance or for sitting. There are no "get-on-the-floor" exercises. The instructors are all certified. The opening warm-up of all classes is similar and designed to open the lymphatic system. There are certified instructors throughout the US, Canada, UK, and New Zealand
